 커리어 패스(Career Path)를 고민하는 사람들에게 중요한 고려사항이 되는 것 중에 하나는, 대학원 진학이 됩니다.

대학원 진학을 고려하는 가장 큰 이유(목적)에 대해서 본인에게 묻고 답을 구하는 것만큼이나, 중요하게 고려해봐야 하는 것들을 사례를 중심으로 알아보고자 합니다.

* 물론 가장 중요한 것은 본인(나)이 왜? 대학원을 고려하는지가 더욱 중요합니다.

 

1. 전문성
 대학원은 특정 분야에 대한 전문성을 키우는 공간입니다. 경력을 어느 방향으로 발전시키고 싶은지, 어떤 전문 지식이 필요한지 고려해야 합니다.

 예를 들어, 컴퓨터 공학 분야에서 일하고 싶다면, 일반적인 컴퓨터 공학 학사 학위는 많은 일자리를 얻는 데 충분할 수 있습니다. 그러나 특정 분야(예를 들어, 인공지능이나 머신러닝)에서 전문적인 지식을 확장하려면, 해당 분야의 석사 또는 박사 학위를 취득하는 것이 더 유리할 수 있습니다.

2. 커리어 또는 직업의 목표

 대학원 진학 후에 어떤 직업을 가지고 싶은지 고려해 보세요. 일부 직업은 고급 학위가 필수적일 수 있습니다. 반면, 다른 일부 직업은 실제 경험이나 기술 보유가 더 중요할 수 있습니다. 해서, 본인의 커리어와 직업의 목표(어떤 직무를 어떤 직책까지 하고 싶은지)를 꼭 고려하면 도움이 될 수 있습니다.

예를 들어, 대학 교수로 일하고 싶다면, 박사학위는 거의 필수적입니다. 반면, 기업의 중간 관리직을 목표로 한다면, MBA나 관련 석사 학위가 도움이 될 수 있습니다.

3. 시간과 자원
 대학원은 시간과 금전적인 투자가 필요합니다. 현재의 생활 상황과 장래의 경제 상황을 고려해 보세요. 또한, 필요한 경우 학비 지원이나 장학금을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면, 대학원은 큰 투자이며, 대부분의 사람들은 일하면서 동시에 학교를 다니기에는 너무 어렵고 힘듭니다.(두 마리 토끼를 쫓는 것과 같습니다) 
예를 들어, 박사학위를 취득하려면 일반적으로 4~6년이 소요됩니다. 그 시간 동안 다른 직업적 기회를 놓치게 될 수도 있습니다.(기회비용 꼭! 고려해야 합니다.)

4. 학교와 프로그램
 모든 대학원 프로그램이 동일하지는 않습니다. 일부는 이론에 중점을 두고, 일부는 실질적인 경험에 중점을 둡니다. 또한, 교수진의 전문성과 연구 분야, 그리고 네트워킹 기회 등도 중요합니다. 학교에 따라 제공하는 프로그램과 과정의 품질이 다릅니다.(유유상종이 쉬우니, 좋은 교수님과 좋은 동문을 찾는 것도 방법입니다)
예를 들어, 어떤 대학원 프로그램은 강력한 알고리즘 기반의 컴퓨터 과학 교육에 중점을 두는 반면, 다른 학교는 프로젝트 기반의 학습이나 실제 상황의 문제 해결에 중점을 둘 수도 있습니다.

5. 대학원 학위의 가치
 특정 산업에서는 대학원 학위가 더 높은 급여나 진급에 대한 기회를 제공할 수 있습니다. 하지만, 이것이 항상 그런 것은 아니므로 꼭 비교하고 잘 알아볼 필요가 있습니다.(학교마다 학과마다 학위의 절대가치가 다릅니다) 일부 산업에서는 특정 대학원 학위를 가진 사람들이 더 높은 급여를 받을 수도있습니다. 
예를 들어, 교육 분야에서는 석사 학위를 가진 교사들이 일반적으로 학사 학위만 가진 교사들보다 더 높은 급여를 받습니다. 그러나 이것이 항상 그런 것은 아니므로 잘 알아보고 비교해 볼 필요합니다.

6. 인생의 균형
공부 외에도 가족, 친구, 취미 등에 대한 시간도 고려해야 합니다. 대학원 생활이 개인 생활에 어떤 영향을 미칠지 꼭! 고려해 보아야 합니다. 대학원은 많은 시간과 노력을 요구합니다.

예를 들면, 이로 인해 가족이나 친구들과 보내는 시간이 줄어들 수 있습니다. 또한, 일부 사람들은 학교 과제와 연구로 인해 스트레스로 일상생활이나 가정 생황에서 불편을 초래할 수 있습니다.

 

이 모든 요소들을 종합적으로 고려하고, 현재의 요구와 장래의 목표를 비교해 보는 것이 너무 중요합니다. 이 과정에서는 멘토, 전문가, 현재 대학원 학생, 대학원을 졸업한 사람들의 조언을 구하는 것이 큰 도움이 될 수 있습니다. 더불어 각 요소를 어떻게 고려해야 하는지에 대한 좀 더 구체적인 아이디어와 인사이트를 얻으셨기를 바랍니다.
